THE REAL McKENZIES

31 January 2004
CSA Leoncavallo, Milano (Italy)

Ok, ok. I admit that I went to this gig as a kind of warm-up for the upcoming Dropkick Murphys gig, that'd be a couple of weeks later. But I came out totally amazed, these Vancouver, Canada guys really stand their own ground! They are absolutely not to be mistaken for DKM-lite or the such. The intensity of their show was excellent, as is excellent their latest cd, "Oot & Aboot", a compilation of drunken scottish-celtic-influenced punkrock themes.

Paul McKenzie introduces us to the show, with some typical hardcore singing... in kilt?
Paul introduces us to the other players too... here's he's standing with guitarist Dirty Kurt Robertson.
And here Matt MacNasty and The Bone are hammering away on their respective (and respectable) instruments: bagpipe and guitar.
I understand girls will already be screaming for more MATT pics. So here's one. More will follow, have faith.
Can you feel how much passion Paul was putting into the show? It was SO intense. Oh, and behind him, you can have a peek at shy bass player Jamie Fawkes.
Here's a well-deserved closeup at Paul McKenzie. He's 44 year old, yet he's as hard as a stone. Amazing hardcorer.
Ahhh... here's a shot of the whole band. Along with the best songs off their cds, they also played the much-awaited punkrock covers of Scottish classics, like "My Bonnie (Lies O'er The Ocean)", "Loch Lomond (High Road)", "O'er The Sea To Skye", and "Wild Mountain Thyme".
Ok. Time for another closeup on Matt and his bagpipe.
Another of those "can you feel it?" pics, full of energy, adrenaline... and fuzzy images.
The Bone, the Real McKenzies logo, and... the new drummer! Sorry mate, I didn't catch what your name was. You're just "the new guy", ok?
Dirty Kurt got so hot, he had to get barechested.
Well, look at how hard Kurt was screaming... no wonder he got hot!
Paul shows what really fuels The Real McKenzies: some good old beer!
Girls. Another Matthew McNasty pic. This time, he plays with the shadows.
Here's something novel: one of those "heavy metal" poses with back-to-back playing... but this time, it's a bagpiper leaning against a guitarist!
Some more hardcore moments. I love the way the band mixes folkish sounds with a straight hardcore song every here and there.
Ahhh... Kurt getting mad in the background, and Matt banging his head.
Some final barechested uplifting singing. Right after The Bone had shown us that The Real McKenzies follow the tradition... no one of them wears underwear beneath the kilt! Wooo-oooh!
