MAN OR ASTROMAN?

09 February 2000

Maybe some people don't buy the "astromen" thing, but take my word on it, these guys are not from Earth! The things they do, the music they play... it's out of this world! I enjoyed myself, even if their set, at 65 minutes, was a bit too long for my ears. You know,I can't stand too much songs without vocals.... but as people (astromen!), they were very cool.

This was the first time I was seeing the club, Binario Zero, with something worth calling stage decoration. All the tubes, and so many computers and robotic looking stuff, it was very cool. And here is the whole band. The second from right is the drummer, who got up and played the guitar during a song. But actually I loved him behind the drums, he's one of the fastest drummers I have EVER seen (maybe even faster than Slayer!)
During the show the band played a lot of weird instruments. A computer keyboard (!), a button that when pushed made a noisy blast sound, a device that reacted to movements, and a two-necked bass (4 and 6 strings). Now, THAT was something different! Here you see how the two-necked bass was played.
And here is the device that turned movements into, er, noise! :-) (Loki warned me that the device is called Theremin, and in case you were curious about this object, there's even a page dedicated to it:http://www.thereminworld.com/. See, this homepage gives you all the little tidbit you need for your culture!)
So, all in all, a feast for the eyes and the singer was a great talkative guy between songs... but the songs themselves tended to drag themselves a bit loo much, with not much as a single line of lyrics. Zen Guerrilla, their supporters, were astonishing as usual, by the way! :-)
