HELLACOPTERS

05 November 1999

Well, well, well. We got 3 bands in a night and, despite my fears of being able to see one good band and two average/bad ones, I was treated to three top-class bands! I loved them all,and actully Zen Guerrilla played such a good set that it was hard for the Hellacopters to follow them as headliners. And since I like the Hellacopters, this means that Zen Guerrillas were REALLY good, trust my word on it!

First band of the evening, The Hydromatics!
They were very good at warming up the audience, and in this pic you can see the whole band apart from the drummer, who happens to be mr. Nicke Andersson, ie the Hellacopters singer! :-) The whole band is itself a super-groups, fronted by Scott Morgan (The Rationals, Sonic's Rendezvous...) plus a guitarist and bassist from other famous bands too (sorry can't remember the names right now!)
Now, Zen Guerrilla! They were astonishingly good! Take a mad singer, a black bassist that holds and plays the instrument as a bluesman, a guitarist that is actually PLAYED BY his guitar (you should have seen him moving and shaking during solos!) and a drummer who broke 3 drumsticks during the 40-minute set, and you get a great band!
Marcus Durant, singer and founder of Zen Guerrilla. He's totally mental, he LIVES the show, jumps around, talks to himself commenting on the audience, and is able to sit down on the amplis to sing a good blues song mixed with jumping and screaming heavy metal bits. And his look is the coolest! I hope to see them again!
Headliners Hellacopters had a hard time following Zen Guerrilla, but managed to give out a great show anyway, with all the best songs from their thre albums (but, hey, where was "Take me where the action is"?????). This is guitarist/singer Nicke Royale, founder of the band after splitting from Entombed.
Nicke and Dala. Some might think Dala can't be as good as Dregen, their former guitarist, now in the Backyard Babies. How wrong they are! Dala is very talented, very entertaining and impossibly thin!
Here you can see the whole band (apart from bassist Kenny, since I NEVER saw him for the whole gig cause there was this long-haired tall guy standing before me and ruining my pics too...). Nicke, a bit of Robban at the drums, Dala and his flying-v guitar, and, on the far right, Boba Fett playing the keyboards. The other singer onstage in this pic is the Scott of the Hydromatics.
Dala being very friendly with me and with a "groupie"...
No ok she is not a groupie (or is she?), she's the girl known over here as "Cladia of RockFM", the deejay on the best radio on the planet (Rock Fm , indeed!). Standing next to her in this pic, his great friend Davide Vigaṇ... :)

A LOT of thanks to Piero Scaruffi and his History of Rock Music archive. His site is just GREAT, and only there I managed to find some info about Zen Guerrilla. This shows two things: his rock archive is the best out there and Zen Guerrillas are criminally underrated by the net!!! People, get out and make some sites about them! :)
